Logan International Airport, which recently celebrated its 75th birthday, has long been a linchpin of New England's economy. It's the 16th busiest airport in the world, handling 900 million pounds of cargo and 26 million passengers. Home to 100 companies and 16,000 workers, it pumps an impressive $5 billion into the regional economy. And it's bursting at the seams.

Comprised of only 2,400 acres, Logan cannot get bigger — it can only get better. To the north, south and east, the airport is surrounded by water. To the west are Boston and its neighborhoods. Wind conditions often constrain use of available runways, making Logan the 6th most delay-prone airport in the U.S.

Logan needed an innovative overhaul to better handle current capacity as well as an estimated 33-37 million passengers by 2010. The challenge: to make bold changes without drastically affecting day-to-day operations or diminishing any level of service. The program: $3 billion combined public and private investments to address key initiatives.

These include improving and expanding Terminal E to handle greater numbers of international passengers, consolidating parking into a central garage connected to terminals by moving walkways, a new dual-level roadway system and upgrades of passenger terminals. Aided by a strong program of community outreach to educate the public and business community about the many project components, Massport rose to the challenge and is achieving steady progress on this remarkable engineering and construction program.
