Welcome to the Massachusetts Port Authority Massport and our inaugural online Annual Report. For the first time ever, we've broken with tradition and chosen a method of communication which offers us the chance to reach a much larger and more diverse audience. Cutting-edge? Yes. Unusual? Not at Massport.
Although Massport owns and operates some of the oldest air, sea and land facilities in the U.S., including Logan International Airport, the Port of Boston, the Tobin Bridge and Hanscom Airfield, our stewardship is progressive and forward-thinking. Massport is a place where innovation is always on the agenda, from engineering and construction, to environmental initiatives, to marketing and communications.
Our policies and programs clearly demonstrate a willingness to explore new approaches to a variety of challenges. In each and every effort we undertake, regardless
of the issue or facility involved, we strive for environmental leadership. Whether advocating use of alternate fuels for on-airport vehicles or developing greenspace
initiatives to reduce noise and air pollution, we make environmental responsibility central to our planning.
At Logan International Airport, we're up and running even as we execute a massive infrastructure improvement program. We're determined to provide the best service possible for our customers at Logan today, even while we make the critical improvements needed to serve their future needs. To further increase efficiency at Logan as well as to provide noise and air pollution relief for our neighbors we're also forging ahead with plans to build a new unidirectional runway.
Simultaneously, we're working hard to strengthen our regional air transportation system, which consists of Logan, Hanscom Airfield in Bedford, Manchester Airport in New Hampshire, T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island and Worcester Airport in central Massachusetts. This win-win-win situation means regular service closer to customers' homes at a competitive price, economic benefits for the airports' local communities and reduced congestion at Logan.
By boldly pursuing optimization at the Port of Boston, we've seen our cargo numbers climb and our approval ratings go up. At the Tobin Bridge, automated tolls should ease traffic flow and make us part of a network of electronically compatible toll roads, including those in Maryland, New Jersey and New York.
In addition, customer service at Massport goes beyond mere delivery of products. It mixes state-of-the-art mediums to most effectively reach, inform and satisfy the greatest number of present and potential customers.
As Massport's executive director and CEO, I'm proud to join my colleagues in inviting you to learn more about an organization that is truly energizing its facilities as well as the New England economy by transforming vision into action.
Sincerely,
Virginia Buckingham
Executive Director and CEO
